MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS IN AFRICA

TheWordHealthOrganization(WHO)definesMental  health as a
stateof well_being in whch the indvdual realizes his or her own
abilities can cope with the normal stresses of  life. Africa still has a long way to go in terms of mental health awareness and care. Mental health is highly stigmatized and there are not enough mental health facilities or resources for the people. Many traditional belief systems in Africa attribute mental health problems to the influence of ancestors or bewitchment, and traditional healers are therefore viewed as the experts in these matters.

Faced with many challenges, including intractable poverty, infectious diseases, maternal and child mortality, as well as conflict, African political leaders and international development agencies frequently overlook the importance of mental health. Below are some of the reasons why mental health should be  highly considered in third world countries

1. Mental health and physical health go hand in hand.

study in Ethiopia showed that people living with severe mental illness – conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar mood disorder and severe depression – died 30 years earlier than the general population, mainly from infectious causes.

Maternal depression has also been shown to affect the development and growth of infants.
2. Mental health and poverty
The relationship between mental health and poverty is cyclical. Conditions of poverty increase the risk of mental illness. This happens through the stress of food and income insecurity, increased trauma, illness and injuries and the lack of resources to cushion the blow of these events. Conversely living with a mental illness leads those affected to drift into poverty through increased healthcare expenditure, disability and stigma.

With the fast rise in technology,Mental health has been downplayed into an innocent persona, something desired to look “cool”. This misinterpretation is not only shown on social media, but also in many TV shows and movies. Someone that claims to have “depression” is seen as “cute” or “quirky”.. you can listen to a few episodes that I did about mental health
